An underground passage was discovered during an inspection of an abandoned house in the village of Chekelik, Kadamjay district, Batken region of Kyrgyzstan, according to the press service of the internal affairs department.

The tunnel was built inside a utility structure close to the Uzbek border. It is approximately 12 meters deep and 1.5 meters wide.

Law enforcement believes the tunnel was being prepared for smuggling operations. Construction was halted after the discovery.

A pre-trial investigation is underway. Investigators are working to determine the circumstances of the tunnel's creation and identify those responsible.

Notably, Uzbekistan is planning to introduce criminal liability for building underground tunnels across the border.
