The original Russian-language audio of one of the final in-depth interviews conducted with investigative reporter and human rights chronicler Anna Politkovskaya has been officially published, marking the anniversary of her contract killing on October 7, 2006. Although British state-funded broadcaster BBC originally broadcast an English-dubbed version shortly after her death, the complete unedited Russian recording had remained unavailable to the broader public for nearly two decades.

Politkovskaya, who gained international prominence for her uncompromising dispatches in *Novaya Gazeta* covering abuses, disappearances, and civilian trauma during the Second Chechen War, used the recording to voice strong opposition to the policies of the Russian government. She argued that the systematic dismantling of independent media outlets, exemplified by the state-directed takeover of private television network NTV, stripped the public of transparent debate and accountability.

A substantial portion of the archival dialogue addresses devastating hostage crises, including the 2002 Dubrovka theater siege and the 2004 Beslan school massacre. Having served as a direct intermediary carrying supplies to hostages inside the Nord-Ost theater, Politkovskaya lamented what she described as an over-reliance on uncompromising force at the expense of civilian life, asserting that heavy-handed tactics failed to address the root grievances feeding armed militancy across the North Caucasus.

Politkovskaya likewise offered a downbeat assessment of Russia's economic trajectory in the early 2000s, cautioning that prevailing domestic stability was precariously anchored to inflated global fossil-fuel revenues rather than sound structural governance. The journalist was shot dead in the elevator of her central Moscow residential building in 2006; while the hitmen and operational organizers received prison sentences, the masterminds behind the contract killing have never been formally identified.
