Uzbekistan has officially taken over the chairmanship of the Council of Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) for a one-year term. The handover of responsibilities took place following the 25th meeting of the council, which was hosted in Dushanbe under the chairmanship of Tajikistan.

The transition of authority was announced by Tajik Prime Minister Kohir Rasulzoda during the closing ceremony of the meeting held in an expanded format. He formally wished the Uzbek side success in carrying out its newly acquired responsibilities within the regional body.

Throughout its tenure, Uzbekistan will be tasked with coordinating the activities of the SCO Heads of Government Council. In addition to this regional milestone, the country is scheduled to assume the chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States starting January 1, 2027, following a decision adopted at a recent CIS summit.
