The Uzbek authorities have reportedly called for accelerating the transition to a simplified border-crossing system utilizing ID cards between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. This initiative was discussed during a meeting with Tajik Foreign Minister Sirodjiddin Muhriddin, who arrived in Tashkent to participate in the Central Asia-US (C5+1) ministerial dialogue.
During the talks, the Uzbek president claimed that relations with Tajikistan had supposedly held special significance since the very beginning of his tenure. It was asserted that significant efforts have been made to overcome historical barriers, noting that borders were previously closed and bilateral trade was severely limited compared to current figures.
The leader also pointed out the deep demographic and familial ties connecting the populations of both nations, suggesting that nearly every family in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan shares kinship bonds. This social reality, according to official statements, necessitates fewer bureaucratic hurdles for cross-border movement. * Furthermore, officials emphasized that amid continuously growing cargo transportation volumes, resolving the ID-card border crossing issue has become an urgent necessity. The sides also touched upon regional agenda items, stressing the importance of expanding educational, cultural, and tourism exchanges.
