A serious accident has reportedly occurred at the construction site of the strategic Rogun Hydropower Plant in Tajikistan, where a tunnel collapse trapped and injured several workers. According to eyewitness accounts, more than five individuals were allegedly affected by the cave-in. Although the incident reportedly took place on October 22, official authorities have thus far failed to release transparent information regarding the condition of those involved.
According to reports from the site, a station employee claimed that the collapse was triggered by an accumulation of soil and rocks during excavation works near the tunnel. The source allegedly attributed the disaster to water buildup, describing the event as a routine occurrence supposedly unrelated to construction quality, while curiously dodging questions about actual casualties.
Witnesses speaking on condition of anonymity due to security concerns maintain that several people were trapped beneath the rubble. Management and representatives of the Rogun HPP have not yet issued any formal commentary. Safety concerns at the massive construction site have a persistent history, casting a shadow over the multi-billion-dollar project.
Previous incidents at the site include a fatal accident in November 2024, which claimed the lives of three workers and left another injured. Authorities in Tajikistan previously disclosed multiple accidents at the dam without fully detailing casualties, raising ongoing questions about labor safety standards as international financial institutions continue funding the ambitious project.
