An investigation is ongoing into a tourist minibus accident on the island of Phuket, Thailand, which resulted in the death of an Uzbek citizen and injuries to four other Uzbek nationals. Among the victims are also eight Russians, two of whom are in serious condition. Under Thai law, the driver of the minibus could face up to 10 years in prison.
According to Article 291 of the Thai Criminal Code, negligent driving causing death is punishable by up to ten years of imprisonment and a fine of up to 200,000 baht (approximately $618). If the driver's actions led to serious injuries, the penalty can be up to three years in prison, and for minor injuries, up to one year.
Thai judicial practice allows for cumulative sentencing, meaning the driver could simultaneously face penalties for the passenger's death and for causing serious and minor injuries to other victims. Police reports indicate the accident occurred around 4 a.m. when the bus, traveling from the Karon district to Phanga province, lost control and crashed into a lighting pole.
A metal road barrier pierced the bus's body and entered the cabin. During interrogation, the 41-year-old Thai driver stated that the cause was the sudden braking of a truck with a trailer moving ahead. He attempted to avoid the obstacle but lost control, emphasizing that he did not fall asleep at the wheel.
The protocol notes that all passengers were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. The investigation into the crash continues, and the final decision on the driver's punishment will be made by the court.
