Uzbekistan is improving its state-funded legal aid system: low-income citizens can now apply to the Constitutional Court free of charge.

This applies to cases where citizens believe that a law applied to them contradicts the country's constitution. Under the new rules, the request for such assistance will be sent by the Constitutional Court itself through the "Yuridik yordam" ("Legal Aid") information system at the applicant's request.

This will allow citizens who cannot afford a lawyer to receive qualified support when their complaint is reviewed. Previously, the legislation did not provide for state-funded legal aid to low-income citizens when applying to the Constitutional Court.

The Senate approved the law last October. The new procedure expands access to justice and strengthens the protection of citizens' constitutional rights.
