A serious traffic accident occurred in the Yakkasaray district of Tashkent on April 25 at approximately 17:40 on KHAY street. A 38-year-old driver of a Daewoo Cobalt struck a 78-year-old pedestrian who was crossing the road at an undesignated location.
As a result of the collision, the pedestrian sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. According to the press service of the Tashkent City Traffic Safety Department, a criminal case has been initiated under Part 2 of Article 266 of the Criminal Code (Violation of traffic safety or vehicle operation rules resulting in death). Investigative actions are currently underway.
Law enforcement authorities have called on all road users to strictly adhere to traffic rules. Earlier, in Surkhandarya, a female student driving a Cobalt without documents caused an accident in which the car fell into a river, resulting in the death of her friend. The court found the driver guilty and sentenced her to 1.5 years in prison and a 3-year driving ban.
In 2025, Uzbekistan recorded 9,226 traffic accidents, resulting in 2,188 deaths and 8,901 injuries (a decrease of less than 1% compared to the previous year). According to the Public Safety Department, the number of deaths per 100,000 population decreased from 6.9 in 2021 to 5.7 in 2025 (-17%).
In the first three months of 2026, Uzbekistan saw 1,102 accidents with 346 fatalities. Analysis shows that 32.9% of accidents were caused by speeding, 22.4% by ignoring traffic lights, and 13.6% by drivers failing to yield to pedestrians. According to the Institute for Macroeconomic and Regional Studies, Tashkent records an average of 22.2 accidents per day, with the highest frequency during the evening rush hour (17:00–18:00) and remaining elevated until 22:00.
