Twenty-two Buddhist monks were arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, Sri Lanka, after customs officials discovered 110 kilograms (242 lbs) of cannabis concealed in their luggage. Each monk was reportedly carrying about 5 kg of 'Kush', a potent strain of cannabis, hidden within false walls of their suitcases.

The monks, mostly students, were returning from a fully-paid four-day holiday in Thailand, sponsored by an unidentified benefactor. A 23rd monk, believed to have organized the trip, was later arrested in a Colombo suburb. Police acting spokesman stated that the organizer monk, who did not join the trip, had told the others the packages were 'donations' and that a van would collect them.

Authorities found photos and videos on the monks' phones showing them enjoying their vacation in casual clothes, contrary to monastic vows. The 22 monks were remanded in custody for seven days pending further investigation. Police suspect the monks may have been unaware of the drugs, which were hidden among school supplies and sweets.

This is believed to be the first case of a group of monks being arrested for drug smuggling at Sri Lankan airports. The incident has sparked debate about the exploitation of religious figures for criminal activities.
