The Tashkent city administration has unveiled a project to build a new metro line in the capital, connecting several western districts with the city center.
The project includes the construction of 12 new stations over a total length of 18 kilometers. Construction is scheduled to start in 2025 and be completed by 2029.
According to the administration, the new line will have a capacity of 500,000 passengers per day, purportedly easing traffic congestion in the city.
The project is valued at $1.2 billion, with funding primarily from the state budget and loans from international financial institutions. Experts question the economic viability and repayment period of such a large investment.
The current Tashkent metro network spans over 50 kilometers and carried more than 200 million passengers in 2023. The new line is expected to boost this figure significantly.
