Across Uzbekistan, 389 kilometers of canals within the system of the Ministry of Water Resources will be reconstructed and concreted. The work will focus on sections with the highest water losses. According to the ministry, these measures are expected to save over 200 million cubic meters of water and 26 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

The President signed a decree on improving the efficiency of water resource use and ensuring sustainable water supply under conditions of scarcity. The document highlights the limited nature of water resources in the country and the necessity for conservation. Issues in the water sector, including a sharp decline in water resources in recent years, demand serious measures in this area.

Modernization of the irrigation network will improve water supply to 158.4 thousand hectares of irrigated land and enhance agricultural efficiency. Repair and concreting of the irrigation canals will be carried out on a priority basis following the "one canal – one system" principle. This means that work will first be undertaken on branches that receive water from canals where concreting has already been completed or initiated.

Furthermore, the decree outlines a comprehensive set of measures to prevent future water shortages. These include the implementation of water consumption monitoring and accounting systems, the use of energy-efficient equipment, and the development of cooperation with the private sector to introduce innovative solutions in water management. The implementation of these measures is anticipated to enable more efficient use of the country's limited water resources.

Previously, the Minister of Water Resources reported that in Uzbekistan, the volume of water resources decreased by 6.5 billion cubic meters over one year. This situation underscores the urgency of measures aimed at conserving and managing water resources.
