More than 100 Uzbekistani migrant workers in Russia were reportedly left without wages and food supplies for four months, according to Uzbekistan's Migration Agency. The total debt is estimated at approximately 24 million rubles (around $324,000).
Some workers allegedly fell into an illegal status. After they appealed to the Migration Agency, the situation was addressed. The agency's office in Russia engaged lawyers, and Uzbekistan's Consulate General sent diplomatic requests to relevant authorities.
Law enforcement authorities initiated a criminal case against the employers under Article 145.1 of the Russian Criminal Code (non-payment of wages, pensions, scholarships, and other payments).
As a result, 105 Uzbek citizens received 9,403,000 rubles (about $127,000) in back wages. The remaining debt of 23,966,000 rubles (approximately $323,000) is expected to be paid by May 15.
Food supplies for the workers have been restored. Those who fell into illegal status have been returned to Uzbekistan, and material assistance is being provided.
The efforts were carried out in cooperation with Uzbekistan's diplomatic missions in Russia and Russian law enforcement agencies.
It is worth noting that Uzbekistan plans to expand the geography of labor migration and enhance training for high-paying jobs abroad. Foreign employers have already submitted requests for over 100,000 specialists, and the government proposes to cover language learning and exam costs.
