By a presidential decree, Azizbek Allaberganovich Urunov has been appointed chairman of the newly established Food Safety Committee, while retaining his position as the president's representative on World Trade Organization (WTO) affairs.

Urunov has served as the president's chief negotiator for Uzbekistan's WTO accession process since 2023. The new appointment aims to strengthen state oversight in the food safety sector.

Deputy chairmen of the committee have also been appointed, though their names have not been disclosed. The committee will be responsible for quality control of food products and implementation of safety standards.

It is worth noting that the Uzbek government had initially planned to join the WTO by March 2026, but this deadline was not met. Last week, the head of state instructed to effectively implement a set of measures to formalize full WTO membership within the current year.
