The practice of boarding Tashkent buses only through the front door has not been fully accepted by passengers, and attempts in 2023 have been temporarily suspended. This was announced at a press conference held by Toshshahartransxizmat on May 14.
Murodjon Ikromov, head of the Tashkent City Department for Transport and Road Infrastructure Development, explained why the practice of entering through the front door and exiting through middle and rear doors is not being strictly enforced. He noted that in several developed countries, boarding only through the front door is standard.
The experiment was launched in Tashkent in 2023, but passengers did not fully accept it, indicating they were not ready. As a result, the practice has been paused. Ikromov stated that if the system had worked, it would have solved the problem of fare evaders, as passengers could monitor each other's payment.
With 1.4 million passengers transported daily, convincing everyone to use only the front door is extremely difficult. Even a trial on specific routes failed, as passengers forgot the rule on subsequent trips.
Currently, green stickers are placed on front doors and red stickers on rear doors of many buses. Authorities plan to gradually improve passenger culture through awareness campaigns and reintroduce the practice in the future.
It is worth noting that the front-door-only practice is fully implemented in regional cities, particularly Urgench. Earlier, it was reported that public transport usage in the capital increased by 17% compared to 2022, exceeding 35%, with 412.4 million passengers carried last year and total revenue of 644.6 billion soums.
