In Uzbekistan's Khorezm region, a police officer has been sentenced to four years in prison for a fatal traffic accident he caused while driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to the investigation and court proceedings, after finishing his shift, the officer consumed alcoholic beverages with friends at a local cafe. Despite objections and warnings from his acquaintances, he ignored safety rules and got behind the wheel of his own Cobalt car to drive his friends home.
Traveling on a secondary road at a high speed of about 120 kilometers per hour, the driver lost control on a damaged section of the road. The car crashed at full speed into a concrete barrier and overturned. One of the passengers in the car sustained severe injuries and died in the hospital the next day despite doctors' efforts.
During the court hearing, the defendant fully admitted his guilt and expressed remorse. The court found him guilty under Part 2 of Article 266 of the Criminal Code ("Violation of traffic safety rules or vehicle operation resulting in death"). He will serve four years in a penal colony and is also banned from driving any vehicle for three years.
Earlier, in the Vabkent district of Bukhara region, a regional traffic police officer hit a 17-year-old girl on a pedestrian crossing.
