The President of Uzbekistan has signed a decree to name a section of a street in Tashkent after Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey.

The new name will be given to a part of Abdulla Qadiri Street in the Yashnabad district, near the under-construction Uzbek-Turkish Friendship Park. The section runs from the intersection of Istiqlol, Fargona yuli, and Nukus streets to the intersection of Abdulla Qadiri Street and Makhtumkuli Avenue.

The decision aims to strengthen Uzbek-Turkish relations and honor the memory of the prominent statesman.

It is worth recalling that Kirov Street in Tashkent was named after Atatürk in the early 1990s. However, in May 2011, amid deteriorating relations with Turkey, the street was renamed Zerafshan. The famous Turkish supermarket Demir located on that street was closed the same year.

Later, the administration of Yashnabad district proposed naming a section of Abdulla Qadiri Street after the founder of Turkey. The renaming required support from the majority of residents.
