The joint-stock company 'Temiryolkargo' has completed the delivery of another (according to the company, the third) Hyundai Rotem high-speed passenger train from South Korea to Uzbekistan. The cargo was transported via an intercontinental multimodal route, the company's press service reported.
Company specialists developed a special transit route for the project: South Korea — China — Kazakhstan — Uzbekistan. This route integrates sea, road, and rail transport capabilities into an efficient system. Various logistical solutions were implemented during the project.
'Temiryolkargo' played a leading role as an international multimodal logistics operator. The transportation was organized on a 'door-to-door' principle from the manufacturing plant to the final destination in Uzbekistan.
The contract for the supply of high-speed Hyundai Rotem electric trains was signed in June 2024 during the visit of the South Korean president to Uzbekistan. The total project cost is estimated at €220.03 million. Uzbekistan is contributing €21.3 million, 'Uzbekistan Temir Yollari' company €13.5 million, and the Korea Eximbank is providing a credit equivalent to €185.18 million in Korean won for 40 years with a 10-year grace period.
For the new train, the 465 km 'Bukhara-Urgench-Khiva' route was electrified. In the coming years, the 196 km 'Miskin-Nukus' railway line will be electrified. As a result, travel time from Tashkent to Nukus is expected to be reduced from 16 to 7 hours.
The first train of 7 cars under the project was dispatched on December 10, 2025, from Masan Port in Changwon, South Korea, and arrived in Uzbekistan in February. On May 5, the Hyundai Rotem high-speed electric train began regular service on the Tashkent-Khiva route. Ticket prices start at 780,000 soums.
According to Transport Minister Ilkhom Makhkamov, the modernization of the Tashkent-Andijan and Tashkent-Termez railway lines is currently under consideration, as well as the launch of 8 high-speed Hyundai Rotem electric trains on these routes. Earlier, it was reported that 6 such trains were planned for delivery.
Hyundai Rotem reportedly could deliver eight high-speed electric trains to Uzbekistan for the Tashkent-Andijan and Tashkent-Termez routes. 'Uzbekistan Temir Yollari' has discussed finalizing the technical specifications of the project with the company.
