Tashkent has installed a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) system in test mode on Osiyo Street in the Mirzo-Ulugbek district, the Traffic Management Center reported. The system is designed to enhance safety at uncontrolled pedestrian crossings.
The RRFB uses bright LED beacons and illuminated road signs to alert drivers to pedestrians approaching the crossing. Beacons are placed on the roadside, in the center of the street, and on a crossbar above the roadway, similar to traffic light installations.
Call buttons are installed on poles on both sides of the road; pressing them instantly activates yellow warning lights. The pedestrian crossing sign is a illuminated box, ensuring visibility at night.
The system is intended for streets with low to medium traffic intensity. According to the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), at uncontrolled crossings without RRFB, drivers yield to pedestrians only 18–30% of the time. After installation, this rate reaches 98%.
If testing is successful, the system is planned to be expanded to other pedestrian crossings in the capital.
Earlier, it was reported that Tashkent drivers now have access to traffic light timers in their navigation apps, a feature already working at over 300 intersections in the city.
