The number of active newspapers in Uzbekistan has decreased almost threefold over the past 15 years, according to data from the National Statistics Committee. The decline has been uneven.

From 2010 to 2015, the number of newspapers fell only slightly, from 649 to 620. However, the sharpest drop occurred between 2015 and 2020, when the number of publications decreased by about 41% to 366.

Between 2020 and 2025, another 147 newspapers ceased operations. Overall, since 2010, the number has decreased by 430, or more than 66%.

Currently, the total annual circulation of all printed publications in the country is 30.2 million copies, averaging about 138,000 copies per publication per year.

Earlier, the Senate of the Oliy Majlis noted that shortcomings in press freedom, along with corruption and legal compliance issues, negatively affect Uzbekistan's positions in international rankings.
