South Korean police have detained one and are investigating three other citizens of Uzbekistan on suspicion of financing and providing material support to the Katiba al-Tawhid wal-Jihad (KTJ) group operating in Syria, Yonhap news agency reported.

According to investigators, one suspect transferred cryptocurrency worth 6.3 million won (about $4,600) to the organization. He is also suspected of using cryptocurrency received from KTJ to purchase 11 used cars and two excavators worth a total of 170 million won. The equipment was subsequently shipped to Syria.

The main suspect, a man in his 30s, was placed on an Interpol wanted list and detained in April. He is currently in custody and standing trial. Three other Uzbek citizens allegedly helped him find and purchase the vehicles. They are being investigated without detention.

Police also established that the main suspect was in contact with his younger brother, who is reportedly a member of KTJ. However, law enforcement did not confirm the man's official membership in the organization.

Earlier, it was reported that in Uzbekistan, a 31-year-old citizen was sentenced to 10 years in prison for financing terrorist organizations and attempting to join militants in Syria.
