Uzbekistan, Tashkent – AN Podrobno.uz. As part of the modernization of Urgench International Airport, the design capacity is planned to increase from 1.2 million to 3.5 million passengers per year. This became known following a press tour to the air hub, in which a Podrobno.uz correspondent participated.

According to the airport director, Oybek Matkarimov, one of the key facilities will be a new passenger terminal with an area of about 39,000 square meters. Its capacity will reach 1,300 passengers per hour. The terminal will separate international and domestic passenger flows, equip modern check-in, screening, and baggage handling systems, as well as VIP and CIP lounges, Duty Free, and food outlets.

The total cost of the project is $242 million: $134 million for private partner facilities and $108 million for state ones. Earlier it was reported that the number of weekly flights to Khorezm increased from 16 to 102. The authorities link the development of transport infrastructure, among other things, to the growth of tourist flow to the region.

Experts note that the airport expansion could positively impact the economy of Khorezm, stimulating trade, tourism, and the hotel business. However, questions remain regarding the high cost of the project and the timeline for its full implementation. At present, it is not officially disclosed at what stage the construction work is and who the private partner is.
