The large-scale urban development initiative in New Tashkent is reportedly progressing at a rapid pace, with authorities setting a target to commission over 20,000 residential buildings capable of housing at least 70,000 people by the end of 2026. This massive infrastructural undertaking is allegedly designed to address growing demographic pressures and housing demands in the capital region.
During an inspection visit to the sprawling construction site, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev purportedly stressed that the expansion of New Tashkent must be accompanied by the simultaneous development of essential public infrastructure, spanning educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and commercial zones. Among the flagship projects is a 55,000-seat stadium compliant with FIFA standards, which is slated to serve as one of the primary venues for the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup next year. Observers note, however, that coordinating such vast logistical requirements remains a formidable challenge for local planners.
Concurrently, the relocation of government bodies to the new urban zone is reportedly underway. Ministries of construction, transport, and energy are currently situated in lightweight structural buildings, while nine additional administrative complexes are being constructed to accommodate approximately 2,600 government employees. The prime minister has allegedly been tasked with streamlining the transfer of remaining state agencies, although critics point out potential bureaucratic hurdles in executing such a massive administrative shift.
Meanwhile, legacy government properties in central Tashkent are planned for commercial divestment, albeit under strict regulatory conditions that mandate their preservation and structural renovation. Demolition or radical alteration of these historical administrative sites is strictly prohibited by decree. Earlier criticisms from the leadership regarding sluggish private investment flows underscore lingering concerns over the project's financial sustainability and the slow engagement of private businesses.
