Official data released by the National Statistics Committee reveals a steady and substantial decrease in the number of registered marriages throughout Uzbekistan. While the country recorded 305.2 thousand marriages back in 2021, this figure dropped continuously over the subsequent years, reaching 267.1 thousand by the end of 2025, which represents a total reduction of 38.1 thousand or nearly 12.5 percent.

During the January–June period of the current year, authorities documented 92.3 thousand newly wed couples. Analysts point out that this semi-annual data cannot be directly compared with full-year totals from previous periods, yet the overarching trajectory signals persistent demographic and social shifts. The official reports notably fail to provide any clear explanations or catalysts behind this downward trend.

Historical comparisons indicate that the highest marriage rate between 1991 and 2025 occurred in 2018, when 311.4 thousand couples tied the knot. The 2025 outcome falls short of that historic peak by 44.3 thousand, marking a 14.2 percent decrease. Interestingly, the absolute number of marriages in 2025 was even lower than the 270.3 thousand registered back in 1991, although experts emphasize that these figures reflect absolute counts rather than per capita marriage rates.

Multi-year statistical breakdowns highlight considerable volatility over the decades, with deep troughs recorded in 1995 (170.8 thousand) and 2000 (168.9 thousand), followed by a significant resurgence in the late 2000s and 2010s. However, the downward correction observed since 2022—when 296.7 thousand marriages were documented—has persisted through 2024 (271.8 thousand) and down to 2025, reflecting mounting societal changes.
