Plans are reportedly underway in the Kashkadarya region to construct a brand-new city named Yangi Karshi, which is envisioned to eventually accommodate up to one million residents. Spanning an area of 5.2 thousand hectares, the proposed site is intended to host administrative buildings, transportation infrastructure, and facilities capable of hosting major international events. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has reportedly reviewed the development blueprints for this ambitious undertaking.
The designated construction plot is located between the A-378 Samarkand–Guzar highway and the 4R-79 road leading toward Shakhrisabz. At present, the location consists predominantly of arid land and low-productivity pastures. While initial projections allegedly aimed for a city designed for 500,000 inhabitants, the leadership subsequently ordered that the capacity be expanded to accommodate a population of one million.
Yangi Karshi is supposed to function as an extension of the regional center, with a dedicated master plan currently under development. The project envisions locating the regional khokimiyat and other state institutions, a congress hall, concert venues, and hotels within the city boundaries. To facilitate mobility, authorities are allegedly considering electric public transport options, including the construction of a surface or elevated metro line connecting the local airport to the railway station.
A separate segment of the initiative focuses on creating a tourism zone along the Karshi Main Canal, covering 235 hectares with a total projected length of about three kilometers. The implementation is planned across four stages, with the first stage involving the development of 30 hectares. This initial phase is said to include a craftsmen's quarter, hotels, restaurants, retail outlets, a museum, a water park, and an artificial lake for boating activities.
