Uzbekistan has introduced a seasonal ban on fishing in natural water bodies, effective from March 11, aimed at preserving aquatic bioresources during the spawning period. The restrictions are designed to safeguard fish populations and maintain ecosystem health, with the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change announcing that the ban first took effect on the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers.

Fishing is prohibited on the Amu Darya and Syr Darya until May 31. For most other rivers and lakes across the country, the ban will be in force from April 16 to May 31. In the Republic of Karakalpakstan and Khorezm Region, the restrictions will last from April 26 to June 10, reflecting regional variations in spawning cycles and environmental conditions.

The ministry emphasized that the spawning period is the most vulnerable time for fish, making the temporary moratorium essential for population conservation and supporting water body ecosystems. These measures are part of broader efforts to ensure sustainable management of fishery resources in Uzbekistan.

Enforcement of the ban will be strengthened by mobile groups of environmental control inspectors patrolling the shores of water bodies. Violations will result in fines and confiscation of boats and gear, with criminal liability applicable in cases of mass fishing, aiming to deter illegal activities and protect biodiversity.

The restrictions apply only to natural water bodies for public use and do not affect artificial ponds of fish farms, allowing commercial aquaculture operations to continue without disruption while focusing conservation efforts on wild habitats.
