Qatar's Ministry of Interior announced that civil defence teams are responding to a fire at the country's main gas facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City. This incident occurred following an Iranian attack, which is seen as a sign of escalating tensions in the region.
In a statement on Wednesday, QatarEnergy confirmed "extensive damage" from the "missile attacks" on Ras Laffan. The company added that all personnel have been accounted for and no casualties have been reported at this time. This poses significant challenges for the world's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) producer.
The announcements came hours after Iran threatened to attack oil and gas facilities across the Gulf region in retaliation for Israeli strikes on its South Pars gasfield, highlighting the ongoing fallout from the United States-Israeli war against the country. Iran's warning targeted facilities in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Qatar's Foreign Ministry, in a statement, strongly condemned the "brutal" Iranian targeting of Ras Laffan Industrial City. The ministry assessed this assault as "a dangerous escalation, a flagrant violation of its sovereignty, and a direct threat to its national security." On March 2, Qatar suspended LNG production after an attack on its giant Ras Laffan facility, adding further pressure to the country's economy.
