Nearly 2,000 people have been placed under quarantine aboard the cruise ship Ambition off the coast of France following a suspected norovirus outbreak, according to France24.
The quarantine was imposed after a deterioration in the epidemiological situation on the vessel. Initially, the death of a 90-year-old passenger was reported, and subsequently, symptoms of acute intestinal infection were detected in about 50 others.
The ship carries over 1,700 passengers and crew, mostly British and Irish nationals. Operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, the vessel departed from the Shetland Islands on May 6, having visited Belfast, Liverpool, and Brest. Planned port calls in Spain have been canceled.
Passengers are currently confined to their cabins while French medical teams conduct sanitary inspections and anti-epidemic measures to contain the potential outbreak.
Earlier, the World Health Organization reported a hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship Hondius in the Atlantic Ocean. Seven cases were identified, three of which were fatal, on the vessel that departed Argentina on April 1.
