US President Donald Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that a deal to end the war with Iran has been 'largely negotiated,' claiming the draft agreement includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
However, Iranian officials dismissed Trump's statements as 'incomplete and inconsistent with reality.' Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqaei described the draft as a 'framework agreement' requiring an additional 30 to 60 days to finalize details before a final deal is reached.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's oil and gas supplies once flowed, was effectively closed by Iran shortly after the US and Israel launched a joint operation in late February. In recent weeks, Tehran and Washington have imposed reciprocal naval blockades in the strait.
The closure has severely disrupted global energy supplies, causing oil prices to surge and stock markets to plummet.
Trump said he spoke with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, Turkey, and Pakistan, as well as separately with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He stated that final aspects of the deal are being discussed and will be announced shortly.
Trump's optimistic statement came after nearly three months of little progress in negotiations with Iran. If confirmed, the deal would end a 12-week impasse that has persisted since a ceasefire was agreed in early April.
