The suspect in a shooting near the White House was killed in an exchange of fire with Secret Service agents on Saturday evening, officials have confirmed. The incident occurred at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

CBS News identified the suspect as Nasire Best, a 21-year-old man known to the Secret Service with a documented history of mental health issues. He had been arrested in July 2025 after attempting to access the White House and was subsequently sent to a psychiatric facility.

The shooting began shortly before 18:00 (23:00 GMT) when the suspect allegedly pulled a gun from his bag and opened fire. Secret Service police returned fire, striking the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Between 10 and 20 gunshots were reportedly fired.

One bystander was also wounded and taken to hospital; no update on their condition has been provided. No officers were injured.

President Donald Trump was reportedly in residence at the White House at the time and has been briefed on the incident, though he has not yet commented. A White House official confirmed the briefing.

The shooting comes a month after a gunman opened fire at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Reporters at the White House were rushed into a briefing room; some filmed as shots were heard across the North Lawn. ABC's Senior White House Correspondent Selina Wang described taking cover as a volley of shots rang out.

CBS News reporter Aaron Navarro, who was on the North Lawn, said he heard gunshots and saw reporters running. He stated that journalists were locked down in the press briefing room for about 30 minutes. The investigation remains ongoing, and road closures around the White House are expected to stay in place overnight.
