Kimi Antonelli, the 19-year-old Italian sensation, won a wild Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday, securing his fourth consecutive victory and fifth of the season. The race featured a thrilling battle with Mercedes teammate George Russell before Russell's engine failure handed Antonelli a clear path to the finish.
Antonelli and Russell traded the lead multiple times over 30 laps, coming dangerously close to contact. After Russell's power unit failed, Antonelli finished more than 10 seconds ahead of Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. "It was a really fun battle," Antonelli said. "It was a shame for him to have the failure because it would have been a very cool battle."
Antonelli now leads the championship by 43 points over Russell after five of 22 races. He has won in China, Japan, Miami, and Montreal following Russell's season-opening victory in Australia.
Russell, who won the sprint race on Saturday and started on pole Sunday, was visibly furious after his engine failure. He threw his headrest across the track, slammed his fists into the car, and hurled his gloves to the ground. "I loved it. I thought it was great," Russell said of the battle. "Right now [the championship] is his to lose."
The spotlight shifted to a classic duel between Hamilton and Red Bull's Max Verstappen in the closing laps. Hamilton overtook Verstappen with six laps to go to secure second place, his best result since joining Ferrari. "It's been pretty tough for the past year and a bit, so to finally find our sweet spot... it's an amazing feeling," Hamilton said.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished fourth, followed by Red Bull's Isack Hadjar. Mercedes leads the constructors' championship with 219 points, 72 ahead of Ferrari (147).
