China has executed Xu Yao, a former manager at Yoozoo Games, who was found guilty of poisoning Lin Qi, the producer of Netflix's series 'The Three-Body Problem' and a gaming magnate.
Lin Qi, who led the mobile and PC game development company Yoozoo, died suddenly in December 2020 at age 39. The investigation revealed that he was poisoned by his subordinate Xu Yao due to disagreements over company management. Xu Yao had worked on the Netflix series based on Liu Cixin's sci-fi novel. Shortly before his death, Lin Qi had reduced Xu's salary and removed him from the series production.
According to investigators, Xu Yao added poison to colleagues' food and drinks. Lin Qi was hospitalized and died nine days later. Four other people were hospitalized with poisoning symptoms. Xu Yao was arrested days after Lin's hospitalization.
In March 2024, Xu was sentenced to death. The sentence was carried out on May 21, and Yoozoo Games officially confirmed it on May 26. The company expressed deep sorrow and condolences to Lin's family.
Lin Qi founded Yoozoo in 2009. The company launched online games like League of Angels and Drakensang Online, as well as Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming. Later, Yoozoo ventured into film production. In 2015, it acquired the rights to adapt 'The Three-Body Problem,' and in 2020 signed a deal with Netflix. The series, released in 2024, became one of the platform's most popular projects.
