The European Union has fined Chinese e-commerce platform Temu €200 million (approximately $232 million) for insufficient control over products sold on its marketplace.

According to the European Commission, illegal goods were sold on the platform, including hazardous children's toys and chargers that did not meet safety requirements.

The Commission stated that the company failed to implement an effective system for identifying and assessing risks related to the distribution of potentially dangerous products.

Temu disagreed with the EU's decision, calling the fine disproportionate and vowing to defend its position.

The investigation into Temu's activities began in October 2024. By July 2025, preliminary findings indicated possible violations of key EU consumer protection and product safety regulations.

Independent experts conducted test purchases on the platform. A significant portion of the chargers failed basic electrical safety tests. Several children's toys contained hazardous chemicals above permitted limits or had small parts that could pose a choking hazard.

In addition to paying the fine, Temu must submit a detailed plan to address the violations to the European Commission by August 28. The EU regulator will then assess the effectiveness of the proposed measures within two months.
