North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for a dramatic increase in the country's production capacity for weapons-grade uranium, urging an 'exponential rate' of growth. The statement was reported by state-run news agency KCNA.
Kim visited a newly unveiled facility designed to produce enriched uranium for nuclear bombs. KCNA described the plant as employing 'more sophisticated technology' and released images showing a centrifuge hall, indicating it is used for uranium enrichment. The location and operational timeline remain undisclosed.
The North Korean leader claimed that production capacity for weapons-grade uranium has more than doubled over the past five years. He emphasized the need to bolster nuclear forces as a deterrent against what he called 'the most ferocious enemies.'
During a meeting with top officials at the plant, Kim 'confirmed the order of priority for implementing the ambitious future plan designed to beef up our state's nuclear forces at an exponential rate,' according to KCNA.
This development aligns with North Korea's strategy to build an expansive nuclear arsenal to counter the US and South Korea. The country has faced international sanctions over its nuclear and missile programs but has repeatedly violated them.
In September 2024, North Korea revealed its first covert uranium enrichment plant. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi confirmed in April 'a rapid increase' in activities at North Korean nuclear facilities.
