Celtic's interest in appointing Robbie Keane as their new manager has sparked anger among the club's pro-Palestinian supporters due to his previous role with Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Keane, Ireland's all-time leading scorer, enjoyed a prolific loan spell at Celtic in 2010. However, his decision to remain in Israel after the Gaza conflict began drew criticism in Ireland and turned a vocal section of the Celtic fan base against him.

Celtic supporters have displayed Palestinian flags at matches throughout the conflict. Graffiti and banners opposing Keane's potential appointment have now appeared outside Celtic Park in Glasgow.

A statement from 'Celtic Fans for the Liberation of Palestine' called Keane's hiring "deeply divisive," adding: "For us, Robbie Keane's decision to manage Maccabi Tel Aviv during the genocide in Gaza is impossible to ignore."

The group referenced Celtic's Irish roots, shaped by genocide and famine, urging the board to reconsider. Keane joined Maccabi in June 2023, before the October 7 Hamas-led attacks, and led the club to a league and cup double before resigning in 2024.

Keane cited a duty of care to staff he brought to Israel as his reason for staying. Interim boss Martin O'Neill, 74, led Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title and Scottish Cup this season.
