Democratic senators have called on the Treasury Department's Inspector General to investigate the planned issuance of a $250 bill featuring President Donald Trump, Axios reports. Current US law prohibits the depiction of living individuals on currency, and the initiative would require congressional approval.

In their letter, senators argue the Treasury should focus on economic challenges rather than a "vanity project." They requested an assessment of projected costs, whether outside parties were involved, and whether the legality of the proposal was reviewed.

Earlier reports indicated that the Trump administration is pressuring the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to develop the new $250 note. If realized, Trump would be the first living person to appear on US currency in 160 years.
