The first phase of a landmark India-US trade deal is in its 'final steps' with only 'the last 1%' remaining, US Ambassador Sergio Gor said Tuesday. He expressed confidence the deal would soon be concluded.
Both sides have made similar optimistic statements in recent months. In early June, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal claimed 99% of negotiations were complete. However, subsequent visits by a US trade delegation and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer yielded no major breakthroughs.
President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced negotiations for the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) in February 2025. Strained ties and global conflicts have delayed talks, with momentum only recently restored.
Experts believe the deal is unlikely until both sides secure critical assurances on market access and tariffs, with neither willing to appear to concede first.
Pakistan's government held a seminar on the Indus Water Treaty, asserting its rights amid India's alleged non-compliance. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar claimed international support for Pakistan's stance.
