A court in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, has sentenced former senior Chinese official Yang Yulin to death for bribery, embezzlement, abuse of power, and money laundering. The case involves one of the largest corruption scandals in recent Chinese history.
According to the investigation, Yang illegally obtained over 2.2 billion yuan (approximately $324 million) over nearly three decades, from 1993 to 2023. He held high-ranking positions in the Nanjing Economic and Technological Development Zone, where he leveraged his authority for personal gain.
Yang accepted bribes in exchange for assistance with contract awards, land transactions, and financial deals. He also participated in embezzling state funds, funneling money into private businesses, and laundering illicit proceeds.
The court not only imposed the death penalty but also stripped Yang of his political rights and ordered the confiscation of all his property. All illegal gains have been seized by the state.
Although Yang confessed and cooperated with authorities, the court refused to commute the sentence, citing the “extremely huge amount of bribes and severe consequences for the state and society.”
