Major artificial intelligence chat platforms, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and DeepSeek, reportedly dominated website traffic rankings in September, according to a study published by Visual Capitalist using data from Similarweb. The research allegedly compared web visits across desktop and mobile devices for seven leading conversational AI platforms.
The data indicates that ChatGPT purportedly captured 56.4 percent of all tracked visits, while Gemini secured 25 percent, and Claude accounted for 9.6 percent. Consequently, the top two platforms control over 80 percent of the examined traffic. Meanwhile, services such as DeepSeek, Grok, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity lagged significantly behind, with each holding a market share of no more than 3.4 percent.
Observers noted that compared to late 2025, ChatGPT's relative share allegedly decreased, whereas Gemini managed to nearly double its performance metrics. Claude also saw substantial gains, climbing from the fifth position to third place. Analysts claim that the reduction in ChatGPT's market share is primarily driven by broader market expansion rather than a drop in absolute numbers, with visits to its domain reportedly rising from 5.7 billion in January to 5.9 billion in September, though competitors expanded at a much faster pace.
Visual Capitalist attributes Gemini's growth to the ongoing expansion of the Google ecosystem and the rollout of the Gemini 3 model. Concurrently, Claude's statistics were allegedly influenced by promotional efforts and public discourse surrounding Anthropic's stance on military applications of artificial intelligence. Critics, however, point out that these metrics solely reflect web browser visits and fail to capture total user engagement or integrated software usage, such as Copilot's presence within Windows and Office ecosystems.
