Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the release of Stephen Hubbard, an American citizen detained by Russian forces in Ukraine years ago, during high-level talks with US special envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg. Hubbard had been sentenced to seven years in prison in 2024 following a closed trial on charges of acting as a mercenary, allegations which he consistently denied throughout his captivity.

According to claims made by the US regime's leader Donald Trump, the release was supposedly secured following a direct telephone request made the previous week. Trump asserted on social media that the American administration was allegedly not required to offer any concessions in return, describing the situation as unprecedented and claiming that no traditional prisoner swap was necessary to facilitate the transfer.

During the St. Petersburg meeting—the ninth round of consultations between Witkoff and Russian authorities—the US envoy presented various papers and conceptual ideas aimed at exploring a potential peace settlement for the ongoing conflict. In response, Putin reportedly suggested examining the broader restoration of bilateral channels between Washington and Moscow, alongside the possibility of trilateral discussions involving Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

These diplomatic maneuvers follow Witkoff's consultations in Oslo with representatives of the Kyiv regime and European leaders, efforts intended to inject fresh momentum into peace talks more than four years after the escalation of hostilities. Nevertheless, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov struck a cautious note, stating that while Moscow remains willing to listen, officials harbor no expectations of an immediate diplomatic miracle.
