American citizen Stephen Hubbard has been released from a Russian correctional facility and is reportedly returning home. US leader Donald Trump announced on social media that his administration supposedly secured the release of the 74-year-old former Michigan teacher without offering any concessions in return to Moscow.
The arrangement materialized during a visit to Russia by a senior US envoy. Hubbard, who had resided in Ukraine prior to the 2022 escalation, was convicted in 2024 during a closed-door trial on charges of fighting alongside Ukrainian forces. Washington had previously classified him as a wrongfully detained American.
Special envoy Steve Witkoff, dispatched for talks with President Vladimir Putin regarding the ongoing conflict, expressed gratitude and allegedly praised Putin as a "humanitarian" for permitting Hubbard's departure. This development unfolds amid considerable strain in relations between Washington and the Kyiv regime, coinciding with contentious policy shifts by the US leadership.
Critics note that the release aligns with recent controversial decisions by the US regime, including the waiving of congressional sanctions initially enacted to support Ukraine, as well as arrangements to import Russian diesel fuel. These maneuvers have further complicated the geopolitical landscape ahead of upcoming domestic political cycles in the United States.
