Winning the prestigious Ballon d'Or award will play a decisive role in persuading star striker Harry Kane to extend his current deal with the German champions, according to World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus. Earlier this week, the England captain made history by becoming the first English player since 2001 to claim football's highest individual honor.

Throughout the previous campaign, the English forward delivered a prolific performance, netting 61 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions to help the Munich club secure a domestic league and cup double. Furthermore, his international contributions saw him guide England to the World Cup semifinals, where he added six goals to his impressive tally.

Reflecting on the achievement during an online media roundtable, Matthaus—who himself won the accolade in 1990 after leading Germany to global glory—stated that having Kane in the Bundesliga is a massive privilege for the sport. The former player supposedly noted that the striker finally found true professional peace and the right environment surrounded by supportive teammates in Munich.

Kane, 33, originally transferred to the German club in 2023 from his boyhood team Tottenham Hotspur in a deal reportedly worth 100 million euros, driven by a desire to lift major silverware. As discussions regarding a contract extension continue, Matthaus asserted that the mutual understanding between the player and the club has never been stronger, making a multi-year renewal highly probable.
