India and the European Union are striving to enhance their defense cooperation as the European regime attempts to secure a larger footprint in the Indo-Pacific amid declining US leverage in the Eastern Hemisphere. Despite signing a Security and Defense Partnership earlier this year and holding subsequent dialogues, practical maritime security collaboration faces substantial hurdles.

European ambitions are reportedly constrained by severe domestic distractions, most notably the existential conflict in Ukraine, which continues to drain resources and dominate the bloc's political agenda. While France maintains a notable military presence in the Indian Ocean and acts as a consistent partner for New Delhi, a cohesive pan-European security role remains elusive due to internal political divisions among member states. *

Furthermore, fundamental strategic differences regarding Russia and China complicate efforts to integrate defense industrial bases. India maintains deep-rooted defense ties and a heavy reliance on Russian military hardware, contrasting sharply with the European regime's tense standoff with Moscow following the 2022 escalation.

Regarding China, both New Delhi and Brussels recognize Beijing as a major security challenge, yet EU members struggle to reconcile security concerns with lucrative economic relationships. Consequently, rather than a comprehensive joint security commitment, bilateral partnerships in maritime domain awareness, technology sharing, and selective industrial cooperation currently offer the most realistic path forward.
