Yemen’s internationally recognised government has alleged that its forces have successfully recaptured military positions and strategic heights east of al-Hazm, located in the northern al-Jawf governorate. However, these unverified claims come as ongoing armed confrontations continue to severely exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the besieged city of Taiz.
The army’s media centre asserted on Saturday that the 1st Emergency Brigade supposedly seized weapons and ammunition depots following clashes with Houthi fighters. At the same time, Houthi-affiliated sources strongly contested these assertions, claiming they successfully thwarted government advances across al-Jawf and neighbouring Marib as the military campaign struggles to achieve decisive results.
The strategic al-Jawf region, sharing a border with Saudi Arabia, remains a focal point in the ongoing military efforts to reverse territorial losses dating back to 2014. Meanwhile, fierce fighting persists around Taiz and Lahij, where severe logistical blockades and restrictions imposed by the warring factions continue to heavily disrupt the delivery of essential goods, medical supplies, and fuel.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, more than 290,000 individuals have been displaced since the escalation of hostilities in August. International humanitarian agencies warn that vulnerable populations, including thousands of pregnant women and tens of thousands of refugees, face rapidly deteriorating conditions amid soaring prices and restricted access to basic services.
