Saudi Arabia's flagship futuristic project, 'The Line'—a planned 170-kilometer-long mirrored linear city—is reportedly being transformed into a long-term, phased development dependent on economic demand. While the ambitious undertaking officially remains part of NEOM's master plan, authorities have notably refrained from announcing a new definitive timeline for the completion of the entire colossal structure, signaling mounting practical hurdles.
The original concept envisioned a continuous metropolis enclosed by two 500-meter-high, parallel mirrored facades stretching across desert, mountain, and coastal terrain. However, pragmatic adjustments have gradually taken precedence. Back in July, reports indicated that the Saudi Public Investment Fund had brought in external consultants to reassess the feasibility, scope, and target population of the initial phase, abandoning the idea of delivering the full 170-kilometer expanse in a single push.
Compounding these shifts, doubts have emerged regarding key architectural highlights within the development, such as a planned multi-tier stadium suspended over 350 meters above the ground. Media reports surfaced indicating that construction on this high-profile arena has been postponed indefinitely, though Saudi organizers continue to feature the initial design in their official bid documents for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, attempting to project steady momentum despite clear modifications.
