German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz stated that the country should not consider the possibility of developing its own nuclear weapons. He made this announcement in an episode of the podcast Machtwechsel.
"I do not want Germany to contemplate having its own nuclear weapons," emphasized the head of government.
He recalled that Berlin previously abandoned its own nuclear program by signing the "Two Plus Four" treaty, which paved the way for the country's reunification, as well as the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
At the same time, the chancellor noted that Germany is ready to participate in European nuclear deterrence initiatives. According to him, the German military has aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons, and the country is already involved in transporting American nuclear warheads. Theoretically, he added, such a mechanism could also extend to British and French nuclear weapons.
Mertz also reported on negotiations with French President Emmanuel Macron regarding the creation of a European "nuclear umbrella." He previously spoke about this during a speech at the Munich Security Conference, stressing that France's initiative to expand nuclear security guarantees in Europe "cannot be ignored."
France remains the only country in the European Union possessing its own nuclear weapons.
