U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Ukraine should demonstrate readiness for peace negotiations to resolve the conflict as soon as possible. He made these remarks to journalists aboard the presidential aircraft Air Force One.
"For now, it's better for Ukraine to sit down at the negotiating table quickly. That's all I'll tell you. We are in a position where we want them to sit [at the negotiating table]," the American leader noted.
The negotiations will take place on February 17–18 in Geneva. The Russian delegation will be led by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, who previously headed Moscow's negotiation group at meetings in Istanbul in 2022 and 2025. The Kremlin explained that at this stage, a broader range of issues is planned for discussion, including territorial matters.
The Russian delegation flew to Geneva late on February 16. From the U.S. side, presidential special envoy Steve Whitcoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner will participate, who have also headed to Switzerland. The Ukrainian delegation arrived in Geneva on the morning of February 16, according to the head of the Ukrainian president's office, Kyrylo Budanov, who is part of the negotiation group.
