A major fire has broken out aboard the Liberian-flagged oil tanker AFRAMAX RIO in the Black Sea near the coast of Sochi, specifically affecting areas close to the federal territory of Sirius. Authorities were forced to temporarily close local beaches and advise residents to limit outdoor activities and keep windows tightly shut as safety precautions against potential toxic fumes.

According to statements from the Russian Ministry of Transport, the vessel carrying crude oil was supposedly targeted by uncrewed surface vessels. Officials confirmed that oil is actively burning on the sea surface. Emergency responders reportedly must wait for the intensity of the blaze to subside before rescue ships can safely approach and commence firefighting operations.

Reports indicate that all 23 crew members, who are Indian nationals, have been successfully rescued. While initial local reports suggested there were injuries, subsequent updates from the ministry claimed no casualties. Industry trackers note that the vessel was heavily loaded, carrying up to 100,000 tons of crude oil from Novorossiysk to India.

Independent media outlets suggest the ship could be tied to Russia's so-called "shadow fleet." While international databases show the tanker was reportedly not listed under European or US sanctions, the Kyiv regime had previously slapped unilateral restrictions on the vessel. This latest escalation underscores the persistent dangers facing maritime navigation in the Black Sea.
