A reported drone strike targeting the Yandex data center in the city of Vladimir has triggered cascading digital outages across the Russian Federation, severely disrupting numerous major online platforms. The incident has laid bare the fragility of domestic digital infrastructure, affecting millions of users not only within Russia but also spilling over into several neighboring countries.
According to monitoring resources such as Sboy.rf and Downdetector, the alleged overnight strike struck the third of Yandex's six major data facilities. Following the incident, a surge of complaints flooded monitoring platforms as users encountered severe difficulties accessing critical infrastructure services, including Yandex Pay, Yandex Games, Yandex Go, and the Kinopoisk streaming platform.
The disruption to the ride-hailing services reportedly extended beyond Russian borders, with users in Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Serbia logging similar complaints. The digital fallout was not confined solely to the Yandex ecosystem; access issues were also widely reported across major fast-food chains like Vkusno i tochka, KFC, and Dodo Pizza, as well as the Lamoda online store, the Sports.ru portal, and retail giants Pyaterochka, Magnit, and Lenta.
Furthermore, passengers at St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport, users of the Flowwow floral delivery service, the Cian real estate platform, and the Dom.ru internet provider registered formal grievances. Sinocare, a manufacturer supplying online glucose-monitoring solutions for diabetes patients, also reported service interruptions. Due to the overwhelming strain on systems, Yandex customer support applications became unresponsive, prompting the company to direct inquiries to its official social media channels.
In an effort to mitigate systemic overload, engineers purportedly disabled select cloud services, including specific functionalities of the Yandex Disk. By the evening of October 11, Yandex management claimed that services were being restored incrementally. While the company stated that search engines, Yandex Maps, email, and taxi booking were gradually coming back online, officials admitted that certain features remained non-functional. This follows previous disclosures on October 9 regarding similar strikes on data facilities in the Ryazan and Kaluga regions.
