Psychologists at Tyumen State University have conducted a study revealing notable contradictions in how young people perceive artificial intelligence technologies. The research involved 556 students whose views were examined using the free association method, where participants were asked to name the first words and images that came to mind when hearing about artificial intelligence.
According to the findings, the concepts most frequently associated with artificial intelligence included intellect, high technology, assistance, speed, and the future. Students predominantly viewed it as a technical system designed to simplify human labor and execute tasks efficiently. At the same time, participants acknowledged the artificial nature of the technology and the lack of genuine human qualities, viewing it merely as a tool serving specific practical purposes. * * *-
However, researchers identified two conflicting approaches coexisting within the students' perceptions. On one hand, artificial intelligence is seen as a powerful technological assistant capable of significantly boosting productivity. On the other hand, students tend to attribute human characteristics to the technology, describing it as capable of thinking, creating, or even being 'smart' or 'foolish'—a psychological phenomenon known as anthropomorphization.
Despite a generally positive attitude toward the technology, students reportedly harbor significant anxieties regarding its future deployment. Inna Vasilyeva, a professor at the School of Education of Tyumen State University, allegedly stated that while students recognize the future potential of artificial intelligence, many allegedly remain doubtful about its overall reliability and safety, issues that purportedly require closer inspection.
