The press service of the Ministry of Justice of Uzbekistan announced that Tashkent wedding pilaf has been registered as a geographical indication in the state register. A geographical indication is an intellectual property object that officially confirms a product's belonging to a specific territory and the connection of its unique characteristics to that region.
According to the ministry's report, historical and ethnographic sources indicate that the culture of pilaf preparation in the Tashkent oasis has been formed over centuries. It is emphasized that wedding pilaf is not just an ordinary dish but a complex process reflecting the laws of chemistry, physics, and biology.
Inclusion in the register provides legal protection for the name "Tashkent Wedding Pilaf" and its traditional preparation technology. This step aims to preserve culinary traditions and protect economic interests.
Previously in Uzbekistan, products such as tuxum barak, Samarkand bread, Guzor tandir meat, Chust knives, and Gijduvan kebabs have been registered as geographical indications. This is part of a policy to support national food heritage and enhance competitiveness in the global market.
